Contractors Resume Work at INEOS and SABIC UK Sites

LONDON (ICIS news)--Contractors resumed work on Tuesday at some refinery and chemical sites in the UK following walk-outs in support of widespread industrial action.

Contractors at the INEOS Grangemouth refinery returned to work following their unofficial stoppage backing contractors at Total’s Lindsey oil refinery in North Lincolnshire.

The Total contractors had protested against a £200m ($286m/€220m) contract awarded to an Italian firm, which will use its own workers instead of employing British contract workers. Total said it still had protestors at the refinery on Tuesday morning.

Construction of a linear low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plant at SABIC Europe’s site at Wilton on Teesside had been affected by the escalating dispute.

Contactors building the plant had resumed work on Tuesday, a SABIC Europe spokesman confirmed. The stoppage had caused some delay to the project, he said.

Union leaders, Total management and representatives of contractor Jacobs had met the mediation service ACAS on Monday and were due to resume talks on Tuesday in an attempt to resolve the dispute that had resonated around the UK.

The stoppage had escalated since Wednesday last week and involved numerous sites employing contract labour.

The only workers to remove their labour as part of the unoffical action at Grangemouth were a number of contractors covered by the National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry (NAECI).

They had resumed work on Tuesday morning, an INEOS spokesman said.

Maintenance and engineering staff at Shell's Stanlow refinery walked out on Tuesday, a spokeswoman said.

Contractors at the Fife natural gas liquids (NGLs) plant in Mossmorran had resumed work after two-days' action. Engineering and maintenance workers at the St Fergus gas plant at Peterhead returned to work on Monday.

A spokesman from BP said its operations had not been disrupted by the protests.
